SPREAD JOY AND INSPIRE TOMORROW’S LEADERS THROUGH THE BEAUTIFUL GAME.

ABOUT PHOENIX FC

Phoenix FC is a non-profit society, established in 1976, that serves to promote and encourage the game of soccer in Sherwood Park. Keeping community at the heart of everything we do, we are driven by a shared purpose to develop exceptional human beings, both on and off the pitch. Our lifelong soccer programming, and culture of innovation and inclusivity, spreads joy and inspires tomorrow’s leaders through the beautiful game.

OUR STORY

From Rangers to Rising Phoenix.

1960

The sport of soccer was first started in Sherwood Park in the early 1960’s, beginning as a grassroots organization dedicated to fostering the love of soccer in our community, under the moniker of the Sherwood Park Community League, and directed by Erich Waldbuesser. Only four teams were created and were run in the Edmonton Minor Soccer program.

1976

We count January 20, 1976, as our official birthday, as on this day we officially became incorporated under the Societies Act in the Province of Alberta as the Sherwood Park Soccer Association. By this year, our programs had over 1000 children playing in Sherwood Park soccer programs, and three years later in 1979, our indoor league was beginning to increase in popularity; before increasing nine-fold in the subsequent three years in 1982.

1988

In 1980, the Sherwood Park U-14 team represented Alberta in the Western Canadian Championship and went on to win the tournament, cementing their place in the history of our Sherwood Park community and our soccer club! By 1982 our program had reached 1,856 players between five and eighteen years old, playing on 130 boys’ and girls’ teams! In 1988 we updated our name for the first time, becoming the Sherwood Park District Soccer Association.

2023

In 2023, we took a bigger step still, our One Name One Badge initiative unifying the Sherwood Park District Soccer Association recreational teams with our Sherwood ParkPhoenix competitive teams to create Phoenix FC as we’re known today.

Our programs still have over 1,500 children playing both indoor and outdoor, on over 130teams, and our programs have expanded to include new and returning players aged four to forty-plus!

If you want
players to work hard, work hard.

OUR CULTURE

Our Culture is the expression of our club’s values, attitudes and beliefs about sports, development and competition. It determines our focus and guides our priorities. The culture is grounded in an identified sense of mission and shared goals.
